San Cristóbal de las Casas

San Cristobal de las Casas is known as one of the "pueblos mágicos", or magic towns in Mexico. It was one of the first cities to be built by the Spanish Conquistadores, founded on the 28th of March 1528.

San Cristobal is situated in the mountainous heart of Chiapas and can easily be described as one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico overflowing with colonial architecture and beautiful churches. With a population of approximately 186,000, it is a mix of traditional Mayan and cosmopolitan cultures and is recognized as the cultural capital and pride of the state of Chiapas.

In the local market you will find indigenous groups gathering to sell and exchange hand-made artwork, fruit and vegetables, wool, spices, tools, and anything else you might want. Within the city you can find interesting museums, local and international restaurants and many cafés offering high-quality local Chiapanecan coffee.

If you wish to venture outside of the city, there are numerous indigenous churches and villages to explore, ancient Mayan ruins, and autonomous Zapatista communities. In San Cristobal you will encounter the perfect atmosphere in which to study the Spanish language. Don't miss the opportunity to enjoy the amazing sights and hospitality of the people of Chiapas.
